Why do I need an editor?

A second pair of eyes on a document is always a good idea.  A fresh set of eyes can spot many items that someone who is invested in the document may not see.  In addition, a professional editor is an expert at clarifying language and improving text, removing awkward grammar and inconsistencies, correcting punctuation and grammatical errors, questioning ambiguous text, and ensuring adherence to a particular style.

Why should I choose you as my editor?

What types of editing services do you offer?

I offer proofreading, copyediting, and substantive editing services, as well as reference/citation formatting/verification for theses, dissertations, and proposals.  I am also available to attend scientific meetings as a scientific rapporteur.  For more details, please see my "Services/Rates" page.

What are your rates?

My rates vary depending on the type of services requested.  Generally, I charge per page for proofreading, copyediting, and substantive editing, and by the hour for everything else.  For more details, please see my "Services/Rates" page.

Do you give student discounts?

I do offer special rates for students working on academic projects such as theses, dissertations, and proposals.  Please email me for special student rates.

What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept money orders, personal checks, and PayPal.  If you need to make other arrangements, please ask and I will see if I can accommodate you.

How do I set up a consultation?

Please email me, and I will respond to you at my earliest convenience.  We can then discuss your needs and expectations, and I can provide my best estimate as to cost and turnaround time.  If the job is very detailed, we can set up a phone consultation.

What style guides have you used?

I have used American Psychological Association (APA), Associated Press (AP), Government Printing Office (GPO), American Society for Microbiology (ASM), Index Medicus Referencing Style, and the Chicago Manual of Style.  Although these are the styles with which I am most familiar, I can edit using a variety of styles; just ask.

What software do you use?

My preference is Microsoft Word, but I also accept documents in WordPerfect.  I am able to support all standard Microsoft Office products.  I am familiar with BOLD educational software as well.

What is your turnaround rate?

Turnaround rate varies with the complexity of the project and is negotiable.  For thesis, dissertation, and proposals, allow for one week per chapter.  For citation and reference formatting, allow one to two weeks, depending on the amount of references/citations, the amount of research necessary to complete all references (i.e., missing issue numbers, etc.), and the amount of formatting necessary.  Short documents (10 pages or less) often can be completed in a few days.

What if I am not happy?

Ensuring that my clients are happy is my number one priority!  I always edit the first part of a document and send it to the client for their review before completing my edit (one chapter of a multiple chapter document or the first few pages of a smaller document).  Once the client indicates that they are satisfied with the level and quality of proofreading/editing, I continue editing the document.  I always build in additional rounds of editing, if necessary, free of charge until the client is satisfied with the finished document.
