Biography

Dr. Matthew LeBaron was born and raised in mid-Michigan.  Active in sports, Matt earned varsity letters in golf, basketball, and track and field while staying at the top of his high school class and graduating magna cum laude.  Seeking to expand his horizons, Matt headed west to the University of Southern California for his freshman year of college.  He returned to Michigan following his year on the West Coast and transferred to Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in physiology.

After graduation, Matt once again traveled west, working in Fort Collins, Colorado, before returning to Michigan to pursue his medical career.  His interest in cancer research began after his mother was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.  After she entered remission, he applied to the Doctoral Program in Pathology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland, and was accepted.

At USUHS, Matt once again distinguished himself as a top student, winning awards for his predoctoral research at the annual USUHS Research Day and Graduate Student Colloquium.  A well-respected predoctoral fellow, Matt was appointed to represent his fellow graduate students on several committees, including the Outstanding Biomedical Educator Award Committee, the Graduate Program Review Committee, and the Assistant Dean for Graduate Education Search Committee.  After playing with the USUHS hockey team for one season, Matt was voted co-captain of the team, a position he held for four seasons.  He also won the USUHS Golf Classic twice in three years.

After receiving his doctoral degree, Matt accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.  His research focus was molecular analysis of human cancer, specifically Stat5 activation in breast and prostate cancer.  While at Lombardi, Matt's research efforts were recognized with a Citation of Excellence in Research for High Impact Publication.  When his mentor transferred his laboratory from Lombardi to the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Matt accepted a faculty appointment in the Department of Cancer Biology at TJU and transferred with the laboratory.  After finishing his postdoctoral fellowship, Matt accepted a position as a Toxicology Specialist at the Dow Chemical Company, allowing him to return to his Michigan roots.

Matt has a variety of interests, including golf, hockey, fishing, hunting, training his yellow Lab, and woodworking.  He is married to a science writer/editor, a fellow Michigander whom he met while they were both grad students at USUHS.
